Prewar gibson mastertone banjo for sale

Excellent condition. Comes with original hardshell case. Case is in good shape but missing handle. As a consequence, these banjos are much lighter than full Mastertone-styles, but people readily agree that the sound is fabulous and is very close to those same pre-War Mastertones.

This great sound is causing many banjophiles to realize the importance of the rim is at least as great as the tone ring. Many people comment that they cannot tell the banjo does not have a major tone ring when they hear it played at a festival or a jam.

Plain maple construction: neck and resonator, stained darkly. Cream bindings on top and back of resonator and along neck.

Single co-rod construction inside. Presto tailpiece installed on banjo and working fine. Newer master-quality hide head.

Mullins Style 4 Walnut "Mastertone-style" Archtop Banjo

Some natural hand wear through finish on back of neck and some random scratches on resonator. Original pot metal flange and tension hoop are both in fine shape.

Banjo sounds and plays great. Discussion of tuners: most people agree that these simple bead ring Gibsons sound wonderful. But many people are scared of the tuners because they were cheap for the period and the friction 5th tuner can drive people crazy.

It is a very easy thing to change the 5th string tuner to a nice geared 5th such as a Schaller. Please order online from website whenever possible. Over the past few months, I have seen "New" Mastertone label stickers for sale on Ebay. It used to be that a Gibson rim having a Mastertone label was one method that you could identify a genuine Gibson Mastertone Does this bother anyone else that these Gibson rim labels are being sold and probably affixed on rims?

But there are an awful lot of them being sold, and they still could be used to create counterfeit Gibson banjos. Thanks for the heads up! It is disturbing indeed.

Usually pretty easy to spot that something is fishy, and they look awful more often than not. With the improvement in technology, it is becoming easier and easier to produce fake replica instruments that can fool many people.

Perhaps someone who has experience handling and playing these instruments can tell, but You really don't see fake banjos on these Chinese sites probably because they would not sell enough banjos to justify creating fakes.

But, an unscrupulous banjo luthier most are honest, I know or someone who learns how to assemble a banjo from aftermarket copy parts, could buy an authentic-looking copy neck and pot, affix a reproduction Gibson label, and fool someone. Now a days, you have to be really careful before buying a banjo. You have to know your seller enough to trust them, and have enough information about the history of a banjo to buy it.

Since Gibson is busy restructuring, I doubt that anybody over there will have time to pay attention to this matter. The most important one, the pre-war style Mastertone label, does not resemble an authentic label at all. No pre-war banjo will have "Nashville" on the label. One of the other prewar labels bears enough initial resemblance to an original to require at least some scrutiny.

Letter alignment, font, and color are things that everyone interested in old Gibsons needs to learn about and familiarize themselves with. But, I have seen some impressive aging of jewelry and other physical items that someone wants to pass on as being old.

It really would not be the difficult to perhaps buy a cheaper prewar pot, scan the label or recreate it and then apply aging techniques to it. I've seen so many "Earl Scruggs" Gibsons for sale on Ebay, for example. Are there some that are fake? I think it's possible.

I have even seen Earl Scruggs truss rod covers for sale.Save Password. Please note this is an archived topicso it is locked and unable to be replied to. I am no expert what-so-ever but while cruising the Auctionzip website I stumbled upon this upcoming auction. Am I mistaken or is this a prewar ish RB3 with original case?

The auction bill states that the number on the banjo is but I couldn't find any information on that. If so, what would this be worth today? This link should take you directly to the banjo auction, the other link was freezing my screen. There is a nice Kamaka Uke if you click next. The "Mastertone" in the peghead is typically a feature. With the limited photos, everything looks original to me, except the truss rod cover.

There have been a couple of this same model, original 5 string arch top Style 3s with snowflakes, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if even lower. With Mastertone spelled out on the peg head it is a ball berring and not knowing condition you should value it at 13 K.

It may not be a BB Joe. As someone noted earlier in this thread, Gibson must have had a few 5-string necks left over from the BB days and used them at least as late as on non-BB banjos.

You guys are a wealth of knowledge. Can't really tell from the picture, but it kind of looks like it might be a flathead, which would NOT be a good thing, because it would suggest that the rim had been cut to fit a non-original tone ring.

Managed to copy the picture and zoom it well enough to tell for sure-- it's not a flathead. But, I'm not shocked. It's just my opinion, but I believe this can be attributed to several factors.

First, the high quality of the numerous boutique-built banjos available today. Finally, the passing of the generation who identified so strongly with the themes of traditional bluegrass music which has resulted in a shrinkage of the people who want to own a banjo "just like Earl's.

Joe, if YOU bought that banjo, I want to talk to you about offering you a nice profit on it, quick! I agree with everything you said, but that was still a very low price on that banjo.

I doubt that anyone at the auction knew that it was an original 5-string and anyone on the internet looking at it was probably leary of the neck being original, while others, without seeing the inside of it thought it was a ball bearing. There are a number of folks on here that would have paid more than twice that for one they knew was right! Of course you know that already! All Rights Reserved. Forgot Password.

The metal parts have been replated, and the armrest and tailpiece are modern. The resonator is obviously not original, and is attached by two thumb screws. As you can see in the pics, engraved metal bands have been placed around the tension hoop, tone ring, and resonator.

The neck is of unknown manufacture. It has Gotoh tuners. There is virtually no fret wear on the rosewood fingerboard. If you are looking a real bargain banjo, this might just be it. Worn gold plated parts. New coordinator rods, and one missing resonator thumb screw. A really nice sounding banjo! New mahogany 5-string neck by Richie Dotson.

No-hole archtop tone ring. This is a really nice prewar banjo. This banjo is exceptionally nice in all respects. I assume it was a custom order, since it has a honey maple finish instead of the usual Argentine gray.

I've never owned one of these with nicer gold plating. The new 5-string neck was made by Richie Dotson. One piece flange. The flange is solid and not badly warped.
